Skillshare class

Skillshare class is finally live! I'm very excited to announce "Inks: 5 Effects to add a dramatic impact to your illustration" workshop!

Ever wondered how just a simple brush stroke can catch the viewer's attention and cause a huge emotional reaction?

In this class I’ll show you my 5 favorite inking tips and tricks which can add a dramatic effect to your illustration, design or any artwork. Many of them I use in my works. By the end of this class you will know how easily and quickly with some inks strokes you can lead the viewer's eye and bring any image to live.

Beauty is all around us, and and I'm very excited to show interpretation of it in this particular way!

I'm proud to take part in "New Visions" exhibit held by Society of Illustrators, New York

The Society is proud to showcase a selection of work from our Illustrator-S members representing artists of diverse and unique talent under the age of 32 who have chosen to support our mission early in their careers.

Society of illustrators, New York. Anna Sokolova. New Visions

Since its inception in 1901, the Society, through its many distinguished members, has sought to promote the art of illustration. A prime requisite of membership is the active participation by each individual, and of the organization as a whole, to give voice to the spirit and being of the Society.

Our members support the Society's mission of promoting the art of illustration by appreciating its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education.

Artists are inducted into the Society membership based on their body of work.  Each Illustrator-S member has been accepted because of their tremendous talent and artistic skill, and these young members have begun to take on an active role in the community. We are proud to display a collection of pieces by our future leaders of the industry. "

Выставка одной картины: FUTURUM II Анна Соколова

Скоро скоро в Центре Искусства и Музыки библиотеки им. Маяковского на Невском 20 откроется выставка FUTURUM II с моим психоделическим космонавтом:)

Exhibition poster. "One painting exhibition: FUTURUM II" by Anna Sokolova

Exhibition Alert!

I'm so excited to announce that this Fatman and Cancan lover is now part of the Society of Illustrators 57 Annual exhibition held in New York right now.

Too bad I can't accompany the illustration in this trip but it's nice to think it's over the ocean now, can't wait to get the book.

"All Power to the Soviets!"

Interesting project I've been working on recently. It depicts  history of Russian Restaurant business and made for Chita City News portal. Starting from 19th Century with its refined restaurants, right through Socialism, New Economy Politics, "90s" to present times.

Each period has its own bright point and atmosphere. For example this particular period of Russian New Economic Policy is titled "All Power to the Soviets!" according famous Lenin's Call.

Thanks for watching! Some journey to history is here (in Russian).

Mail Me Art: Open All Hours

I'm excited to be a Part of Mail Me Art: Open All Hours project created by Little Chimp Society. This time work was a bit challenging, 'cause artist had to paint straight on the paper card (which had specific texture) and there wasn't place for a mistake (only happy incidents :)

My illustration is called "Durch Zweifeln zur Gewißheit" which in German literally means "Through Doubts to Confidence".

We've also made a "Making of" video depicting some process.

Atmospheric music is created by Modkot.

Here you can see that the card made a looong jpurney to the Saint Petersburg central Post Office. Hopefully art arrives in UK soon! Stay tuned!

Hunting for good results. How to survive as a trader.

Just got a parcel from publishing house with several books and DVDs with my illustrations. Cool! :) The package includes book called "In the Trading Jungle with Hunting for Gerchik" (Gerchik is a well-known Russian trader and consultant).

Honestly I'm rather distant from that thematic but advises in a book are pretty much suitable for all business types and self-development. I'd say it's a self help book in a way. The whole story describes the journey of a newbie to a World of Jungle (world of trading of course:)) and what can happen during that tough but exciting way.

Here are some illustrations and of course some drafts.

This advice I like most of all - be careful what you read, You should be as specific in what you read as in what you eat.

Making plans and keeping a kind of a journal can be very helpful.

Some sketches and drafts you can find below. I've used usual 80gm paper for printer and Pigma Micron liners.

Single cover for Leningrad band

New interesting project - covers for single of Leningrad band (famous band from Saint Petersburg actually:)

The single called "Saint Laurent Dress" and guys wanted to have the red dotted pattern on the cover. The whole idea is as usually very sarcastic and has this even burlesque and absurd feel.

Both covers are used for different web presentations. Illustration with a hat is an allusion to famous Saint Laurent's magazine ads:)

Do you like coffee?

Here is very delicious project I've been working on recently - style and illustrations for a small Moscow Coffee Shop. The idea of the brand is that coffee not only tastes great but can bring its own interesting story, even a love story. The client was inspired by the "Love Potion no. 9" movie (Remember that old American one with Sandra Bullock?).

Here are some illustrations. The style is a bit vintage with engraving feel.

Considering illustrations are used for different purposes the final results

are made in vector using Wacom tablet and Adobe Illustrator.

As always after making some pencil sketches I'm using Pigma Micron Liners.

As always after making some pencil sketches I'm using Pigma Micron Liners.

The most difficult part was working on "Snacks". The thing is that Company didn't know yet how exactly the snacks would look like so we tried several variations.

Client wasn't sure if there would be a kitchen or just  already packed snacks

Spring or Autumn?

Seems like spring is pretty near but as always in St.Petersburg it's freezy cold and grey. That reminded me of an autumn painting which was made several months ago.

The main goal was to show the atmosphere and the mood using warm colour palette and a bit transparent and unclear composition.

The original has a little another colour tone, This tint was made digitally in Photoshop

First the sketch on canvas was made – on that stage I’ve imagined the composition pretty different.

I'm using cotton and linen canvases mostly

But as usual you should be flexible and move with the painting while it starts to appear more clear. At first the whole image of house and forest was about to be on the painting, but stroke after stroke the conception has changed).

Below you can see the brush strokes and texture more closely

Hope you ejoy this mood too!

Thanks!

Let's try tattoo style! Robin bird in a frame

I was trying to make something like this several times and finally got opportunity! Frankly speaking, working with watercolors or other  non-digital mediums is always a challenge for me, since you can't easily make changes and the feel of work is absolutely different.

After thinking over the idea - combination of vintage tattoo style and Robin bird character - I've made several sketches using Photoshop (it's easier to try different variations very quick and painless:)

Here are some steps of drawing. I've used Canson Montval Aquarelle paper 24 x 32 cm and Pigma Micron liners.

After the outline is made - the most interesting part begins - putting some colors, which can lead to  unexpected results.

First I've tried another color palette and only after that realized it doesn't suit. Putting gouache (opaque paint) on the watercolor made bold and a bit textured effect.

Delft Blue Jubilee Invitation style

Hi guys! Just wanted to share the exciting project I was commissioned recently - invitation and stationary design for Jubilee celebration.

This project shows the idea of compilation Delft blue (Delftware) ornamental style and northern spirit of my native city Saint Petersburg. Here we have rather severe climate so atmospheric variety of the blue shades used in this famous Holland technique suits perfectly.

delftblue5.JPG

After browsing through different porcelain pieces some of which were really amazing and studying classical Delft patterns I’ve made several sketches. Wasn’t sure whether the designer paper (watercolor paper imitation) is available for printing so the two variations were made – with pattern and more ascetic and clean one, considering the paper texture will add the special feeling to the illustration.

delftblue2 copy.jpg

In the middle of the frame there is an old Palace of Vladimir Alexandrovich in which the celebration is taking part. The view of the building depicts typical Saint Petersburg central view near the Neva river.

I used Canson Montval watercolour paper size A4 and synthetic brush №2.

The style is about one chosen blue color so it was pretty easy to paint through the work. After pieces were finished I’ve scanned them and made a bit brightness/contrast tweaking in Photoshop.

Here are some photos of drawing process and preview of the result. The invitations are in printing house so probably will be able to grab couple of them soon.

This design is also planned to be a part of the gift hand painted on Royal Dutch porcelain box.

Vintage duck drawing

I've been browsing through some vintage animal books recently and found it really inspiring. This book is just full of ideas Hope you enjoy this small lesson of wood duck simple drawing.

I’m using simple set of drawing  instruments  - HB pencil, Pigma Micron Liner 02, Pigma Micron Liner 05 or  1 and white soft General's pencil. My favorite Strathmore toned paper is always here too.

1. First we’re making simple pencil outline drawing, it gives a composition view and allows to see the position of personage on paper.

2. Showing the highlights using any white pencil (pastel or watercolor). I’m using Derwent Colorsoft.

3. Putting some details to the work with thin liner (05 or 1). I’m the kind of artist that likes to make some details first so it can keep the interest to the drawing and doesn’t let to forget the whole idea. Some prefer to do it only in last part of production.

step3
step4

4. Continue with details. Here we can use more thick liner for more dark parts, pointing the head and some feathers. It’s important to keep the feather like the “hair line” in right direction.

step6

6. Going to add more details – clutches, beak, neck, feathers - and finish our drawing. Please note that white pencil is rather thick and fat so its better use it first in every highlighted part although it can cover our black liner.

step3closeup

Here is a close view of our duck’s eye which kept my contact with the drawing.

step5

5. Working on wing’s feathers can be a nice concentration thing))

                          Well done!
